NASCAR 2011: RCR Aims for a Forceful Comeback

This past weekend, the NASCAR season commenced with the Daytona 500 and the circuit finds itself in Phoenix this Sunday for the Subway Fresh Fit 500. NASCAR believes that if the race were shifted to the second week of the schedule, it would be an advantage to all teams. At 1:00 p.m. Arizona time, starts at the Subway Fresh Fit 500, and it will air on FOX.

With a lot of open room to RV/camp and party for numerous days before the races begin, Phoenix is usually a much-admired site for NASCAR fans. Often seen at a music festival like Country Thunder, the perfect weather conditions and the open desert offer a very fascinating experience. Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne will challenge to re-establish last weekend’s magic in Avondale and the Phoenix International Raceway anticipates good attendance for this race.

This weekend, Richard Childress Racing is one team looking to make a strong return. The team experienced a dismal Daytona 500 on Sunday, although last year they have ruled with success in three of the four restrictor-plate races.

In the 500, Paul Menard scored a solid ninth-place finish in his first race with RCR, but the rest of the team had a rough go of it, despite showing capable speed. Clint Bowyer was clipped in a late-race accident that left him 17th in the final rundown and Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton were knocked out by unanticipated engine malfunctions.

New “simplified” points system in NASCAR is more penalizing on a bad finish, when judged against to positive for a good one. Of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway is only the second race and neither team nor driver wants to start the season as a disappointment.

In Phoenix, Jimmie Johnson has been near perfect over the course of his career. He has won four times in his 15 starts. On 13 occasions, he has finished in the top 10 and 10 of those finishes are inside the top five. 15th is his worst finish at Phoenix.

Martin Truex Jr. will be an additional driver to keep an eye on. Truex has four top 10′s in his last seven starts at this track. His worst finish is 17th, where early mechanical concerns compelled him out of the race very early. Coming weekend, look for Truex to possibly play the role of spoiler.

According to the various sports, betting websites the best betting odds for few popular drivers are Denny Hamlin (7/1), Carl Edwards (8/1), Jimmie Johnson (6/1), Kyle Busch (10/1), Mark Martin (25/1).

The crash was witnessed by the police officer and immediately checked on the occupants of the cars. As the officer approached Annett’s vehicle, Annett shoved breath mints in his mouth, which prompted a field-sobriety test. In the crash, no one was injured. To administer a breath test, the officer then requested another officer to come to the scene. According to the police report, estimated US$6,000 damage to the truck Annett was driving and $3,000 to the car he hit.

The team said that it is currently working with Michael to develop a package of sanctions, addressing this issue. The team also said that it has been in contact with NASCAR and the police. A zero tolerance policy towards alcohol use, a year-long community service program and additional internal sanctions are among these will be successful completion of a comprehensive alcohol awareness program.

At Daytona International Speedway next week, Team owner Rusty Wallace, who is also an ESPN analyst, said Annett would be allowed to drive the No. 62 car in the Nationwide race next week.

Annett is a native of Des Moines, Iowa. He finished 10th and 13th in points, driving the past two Nationwide Series seasons for Bob Germain, before moving to RWR this season to replace Brendan Gaughan. In 71 races, he has no wins and six top-10s.

At Santa Anita – Gladding Won The Grade 2, $150,000 San Antonio Stakes

On Sunday, trainer John Sadler’s thoroughbred race horse Gladding, which was making his stakes debut, won the Grade 2, $150,000 San Antonio Stakes for older horses.

Capping a big weekend at Santa Anita Park for Sadler, Gladding led from start to finish.

Sadler’s Twirling Candy won the Strub Stakes and Zazu won the Las Virgenes Stakes on Saturday.

A joyful Sadler said in the winner’s circle, “This is a good habit.”

For the win in the San Antonio Stakes in horse racing betting odds at Santa Anita, Gladding paid $5.20, which hosts some of the most well-known racing events in the U.S. leading up the Triple Crown races in the spring.

Following the race’s favorite, Aggie Engineer, Gladding had been a solid second choice, generally because the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio race came up with little speed.

Gladding was able to get to the front in 23.69 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, over a track that is well-suited to front-runners. Gladding then slowed it down noticeably through a half-mile in 48.72 and six furlongs in 1:13.41, even though the sped up through the next quarter-mile in less than 23 seconds, as well as the final furlong in less than 12 seconds to complete 1 1/8 miles on the fast main track in 1:48.

Sadler said, “It’s fun when it works out. It doesn’t always.”

Sadler further mentioned that for the Santa Anita Handicap on March 5, Gladding could join Twirling Candy in the starting gate.

Today, Dawsonville, Georgia’s Bill Elliott announced his 2011 plans for the NASCAR Sprint Cup season today via his website, BillElliott.com. Since semi-retiring after the 2003 season, the 16-time Most Popular Driver has been driving part-time.

A View on 3rd Day of Dakar Rally

The Dakar rally is being held in South America for the third year, looping for 9,500 km through Argentina and Chile with its start and finish in Buenos Aires. In the bike category this year, there are no Canadians have entered and only one is in a car; Conor Malone of Toronto.

Spaniard Marc Coma took his first stage victory, on the third day of the 2011 Dakar Rally by beating fellow KTM rider Cyril Despres. Coma rode strongly in the trek, Down by 2:35 at the end of Day 2, from San Miguel de Tucuman to San Salvador de Jujuy to finish 02:21 ahead of his rival. On Day 3, Despres maintains the overall rally lead.

Throughout the day’s competition, Despres made a terrific comeback to finish second and lose only a minute and a half from his overall lead. During the first checkpoint, Portugal’s Paulo Goncalves led but he would gradually slow to take third at the end of Day 3.

With a neutralized section in between, the third leg of the journey featured a special, which was broken into two smaller parts. The first timed special taking place through desert canyons and red sand cliffs, terrain varied widely throughout the day. Despres was making up significant ground on the field and fast approaching Coma, although heading into the first neutralized section KTM’s Coma established 3:09 advantage over his rival. Coma led as Goncalves and France’s Olivier Pain remained closely behind, throughout the neutralized section.

On the car side of things, Nasser Al-Attiyah of Volkswagen Motorsports won the third stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally in Argentina. Teammate Carlos Sainz continues to hold the overall lead. At the start of Tuesday’s stage, Al-Attiyah was third overall in the standings.
Out of 156 entries, Conor Malone is in 131st spot, which is not bad for a total rookie. He said that his goal is to finish. He added that he knows he will not beat the Volkswagens but for him finishing is realistic. Finishing will be like a win for him.

Wednesday’s running will take the drivers from San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina to Calama, Chili and it will mark the fourth of 13 stages.

Kentucky Speedway Gets Incentives Approved: NASCAR

Ahead of a much-anticipated NASCAR Sprint Cup race in July, the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority has approved incentives for the Kentucky Speedway.

Kentucky Speedway is currently undergoing an $82 million expansion and the approved incentives have made Kentucky Speedway eligible for up to $20.5 million in tax rebates over a 10-year period. To approve the incentives for the Kentucky Speedway in Gallatin County, the six-member board voted unanimously and to give preliminary approval to the Ark Encounter park in Grant County.

In a statement, Gov. Steve Beshear said that an annual $150 million economic impact in Kentucky would be from the Sprint Cup race. Especially during the current economic recession, it will be great news. Seating capacity is being expanded from 60,000 to 102,000, and parking and camping areas are being enlarged, to accommodate the Sprint Cup race, scheduled for July 9.

During a 10-year period, the approval means the speedway will be eligible for as much as $20.5 million in performance-based rebates, based on an investment of $82 million. Through the recovery of sales tax generated at the racetrack, the incentive allows the applicant to recover as much as 25 percent of development costs.

A 500- by-75-foot wooden ark will be the centerpiece of the Ark Encounter Park, billed as a replica of the biblical Noah’s Ark. With critics, questioning whether granting state tax incentives to the project would violate laws separating church and state, the proposed project has garnered national and international attention. The race, which is scheduled for July 9 would be very enthralling for every spectator.

NASCAR Most Popular Driver Award Achieved By Dale Earnhardt

For the eighth straight year Dale Earnhardt Jr. has pocketed NASCAR’s most popular driver title who is also a favorite in racing odds.

At the Bellagio in Las Vegas Earnhardt, was offered with the award at the National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers luncheon and he drives for Hendrick Motorsports driver.

Earnhardt is getting close to the record 10 straight most popular driver awards won by Bill Elliott from 1991 to 2000 with the triumph. As Elliott is the all-time leader, winning the award with 16 times, he has a long way to go yet to top Elliot’s total.

Bobby Allison has seven, Earnhardt is now at eight and Richard Petty has won 10 times.

Yet, finishing 21st in points and missing the Chase for Sprint Cup for the second straight year and third time in four seasons Earnhardt did not have a great NASCAR season.

In 2008 it’s part of a descending trend for Earnhardt, who is in a 93-race losing streak dating back to Michigan.

With five-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Team owner Rick Hendrick said he is moving Earnhardt into the same shop. He is pairing him with Jeff Gordon crew chief Steve Letarte.

With having Mark Martin and Alan Gustafson as his crew chief Gordon will now share a shop.

“It’s hard to say how it’s going to affect us.” Johnson’s crew chief, Chad Knaus, made a statement.

Legal Fight Between Racing NSW and Betfair

With an appeal against a landmark, Federal Court ruling expected in the next week, the two-year legal fight between Racing NSW and online betting exchange Betfair would go to the High Court.

Betfair intends to appeal the Federal Court’s ruling to allow New South Wales racing administrators to charge a turnover-based fee called a ”race fields fee”. Last week, the right of Racing NSW to charge a 1.5 per cent levy on turnover was upheld by three Federal Court judges. Appeals from Betfair and Sportsbet were also quashed by the court.

To pursue further legal action, Betfair is believed to have the support of Mr. Packer. The company believes to lodge a formal complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. For the company, it is an anti-competitive conduct.

Company directors agreed to appeal the decision to the High Court, at a Betfair board meeting in Melbourne on Monday. The company’s plan for an appeal was the first item of business. Last week’s court ruling was hailed by Racing NSW as a victory for the racing industry. In case Betfair and Sportsbet won in court, the governing body said it would release $120 million of revenue paid by corporate bookmakers that it had held back and announced an increase in prize money for races.

With the ACCC, Betfair plans to lodge a formal complaint over what it claims is a conspiracy to protect the TAB’s revenue through an uneven race fields fee structure.

Mr. Twaites said, ”Our gripe is that we are being asked to pay a fee that is six times higher than the TAB is paying. Racing NSW is charging the TAB 9 per cent of their gross revenues, and they are charging us 60 per cent. This is about a low-margin business challenging the monopoly of a high-margin business, and we intend to keep fighting.”

Justice Nye Perram concluded in his original ruling, ”the respondents [Racing NSW] plainly intended the fee to protect the TAB from competition from Betfair and that their intentions were protectionist”.

He added that Racing NSW’s ”actual purpose was to protect the revenues of the TAB from competition from interstate operators”.
